Cut For Cancer - Fundraiser

Nicola Palmer and Dave Palmer of Skillogalee Winery and Restaurant in the Clare Valley will cut their hair to raise money for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation in support of the Brookman Ward at the Hospital in Adelaide, on 11 February 2012.

The idea was inspired by their four-year-old nephew and grandson, Kai, who is undergoing a battle with Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, a rare type of cancer.  Nicola, who is the manager of the acclaimed Skillogalee restaurant, will chop off her famous 12-year-old dreadlocks, while Dave, Skillogalee's owner and managing director, will have his head shaved for the cause.

Nicola said she is looking forward to the event and hopes to raise much needed funds for the Brookman Ward, which has done so much to help her nephew and other children like him.

“After my four-year-old nephew Kai was diagnosed with an incredibly rare type of cancer, PPB, we have been inspired to give something back to the hospital that has done so much in his continuing treatment,” Nicola said.  “The Brookman Ward is the kid’s cancer ward and the aim is to raise $30,000 to go towards some vital machinery for the ward to help the other little kids going through the kind of ordeal my nephew Kai has endured for the past year.”

“I am going to raise funds by seeking sponsorship and by hosting an event on 11th February 2012, (which is Kai’s 5th birthday).  The highlight of the night will be the removal of my dreadlocks for the cause, after 12 years of affectionate attachment (the honour of pruning the first one will be auctioned!).  My father, Dave, will also be sacrificing his familiar locks on the day!

“We will receive donations now and up to the end of February.  All donations will go directly to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital following the day’s proceedings,” she said.

Gourmet catering from some of the region's best known suppliers and producers will be provided as part of the entry ticket, and drinks, including Skillogalee's own award-winning wine, will be available to purchase.  Entertainment will be provided by South Australian musicians, and a variety of local artists and businesses will donate items for auction.  There will be a lucky dip wine sale where wines donated can be purchased, blind, at $20/bottle – we’re hoping to have a number of icon and high-end premium wines within the concealed range.  There will be a number of activities for children.

With an estimated 300 guests, this inaugural event has a fundraising target of $30,000.

Guests and donors are invited to buy tickets and attend the fundraiser event to be held on 11th February 2012 at Skillogalee House, from 5.30pm.  Tickets are available from Skillogalee Cellar Door, Wild Saffron in the Main Street of Clare or on-line (click the link below for tickets or to make a donation).
